Upper Valley MEND takes action to preserve affordable workforce housing
LEAVENWORTH — Upper Valley MEND took a significant step toward tackling the pressing housing crisis in the Upper Valley with the acquisition of 28 affordable rental apartments across Leavenworth, with another three apartments scheduled to close at the end of January. The acquisition became official on January 1 as part of its $6.8 million Solid Foundations Campaign, a community-wide initiative aimed at providing affordable workforce housing in the region both now and in the future.
The Upper Valley is grappling with escalating home values and limited supply, driven by factors such as increased tourism, job growth, an influx of remote workers, and scarce buildable land. This crisis affects individuals across socioeconomic levels, including those in the service industry, education, healthcare, and agriculture.
Upper Valley MEND finalized a purchase with the Marson family to acquire these rental apartments and turn them into affordable, workforce housing in perpetuity. This acquisition is a crucial step toward meeting the critical need for housing in the Upper Wenatchee Valley. The properties provide a long-term solution to the housing challenges faced by the community.
The Solid Foundations Campaign, launched in 2023, has raised over $5.4 million to date in gifts and pledges. It is a first-of-its kind fundraising endeavor by UV MEND to cover the cost of the property and sale, complete improvements on the properties, establish a maintenance fund and hire a property manager. The goal is not only to secure the current housing units but also to pave the way for future expansions in housing opportunities.
"The Upper Valley is at a crossroads, and this acquisition is a beacon of hope for those in need of affordable housing. Through the generosity of the Marson family and the support of our community, we have the chance to make a lasting impact on the future of housing in our community," said Kaylin Bettinger, UV MEND Executive Director.
The 31-unit acquisition complements the existing 20 units already under UV MEND's management since 2000 as part of their affordable homeownership program. The Solid Foundations Campaign, currently ahead of schedule, will continue through 2024 to raise the remaining $1.4 million needed to reach the ambitious $6.8 million goal.
