Volunteers are the backbone of all that we do.
Whether sorting donations for Das Thrift or gleaning fruits and vegetables from local farms, the skills and time donated by our volunteers make a difference in the lives of many Upper Valley residents.
See below for more information about some of the volunteer opportunities we have available.
Depending on the program, a background check may be required before your first shift.
Community Cupboard
Work consists of weekly scheduled shifts, for 2-3 hours at a time, Monday to Saturday. Must be comfortable working with all kinds of people. Tasks include entering data, checking families in and out, restocking food, moving boxes of food around, cleaning, and repackaging bulk foods. Busy environment.
Grocery Rescue
Morning volunteer shift, typically 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday to Saturday. Grocery rescue is independent work that requires having your own personal vehicle that can carry many bins of food. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
Gleaning
Work outside, helping to harvest produce throughout the Wenatchee Valley. Work is primarily May-October, for 2-hour shifts. Volunteers typically work in groups. The work consists primarily of harvesting and lifting bins of produce.
Das Thrift and Sorting Center
Weekly scheduled shifts available seven days a week. Must be comfortable working with all kinds of people. Requires some lifting of up to 25 pounds. Jobs available both in Das Thrift and in the sorting center where community members donate goods.
Administrative Tasks
Volunteers help in the office with a variety of tasks, most commonly stuffing envelopes to help with outreach and fundraising efforts. Admin projects like this usually happen 3-5 times per year and last about 3 hours. Skilled volunteers, such as photographers and legal experts, also assist MEND with special projects on an as-needed basis.
